The purpose of your windshield is to protect you from wind, rain, snow, and sleet as it provides you with optimum visibility. Unfortunately, windshields are made of glass, and even this tempered type of glass is fragile to today’s driving conditions. All it takes is one single rock projected at a modest speed in order to come away with a chipped or cracked windshield.
It is important to have it your windshield crack or chip inspected even if the damage seems minimal. You should consider repairing it whenever possible, as even the smallest amount of damage can turn into a huge crack. Is your car windshield safe?
Before you drive with a cracked windshield, you should consider:
- Windshield Crack Size: Chances are good that your state has laws against driving if the crack is large. A windshield with a smaller chip or crack may be driven for a longer period of time (although repair is HIGHLY recommended).
- Windshield Crack Position: Cracks that obstruct the driver’s view are probably prohibited by law in your state. Small cracks on passenger side or rear passenger side windows may be permissible.
- Windshield Cracks That Grow: The crack may be under the illegal length, but that doesn’t mean it will stay that way. Just a dip in the road, tall speed bump, etc. can push the crack to illegal lengths in a mere second.
- Can I drive with a cracked windshield in Idaho? Courts in Idaho have ruled that any cracks in a windshield can make a vehicle unsafe to drive. By law, your replacement windshield must be of the same quality and kind as your previous windshield. It is also illegal to operate a vehicle where windshield damage keeps the wipers from working.
Will that rock chip turn into a costly repair?
If your car or truck windshield has a small chip or crack, don’t ignore it, fix it. According to the non-profit Car Care Council, disregarding a small windshield crack now could lead to bigger problems down the road.
A rock chip is an unwanted occurrence but, in most cases, it can be fixed. If your windshield damage is not directly in the driver’s line of vision, chances are very good that your front windshield can be repaired. To determine if the damage can be repaired take your credit card out and if the crack is shorter than your credit card it can usually be fixed.
